Meaning & History

Gebara is a Basque habitational surname referring to someone from the village of Gebara (known in Spanish as Guevara) in the province of Álava, Basque Country, Spain.

Etymology and History

The toponym Gebara is of uncertain origin. Linguists Koldo Mitxelena and Joaquín Gorrochategui have proposed a connection to the ancient place names Gébala (Γέβαλα) and Gabálaika (Γαβάλαικα) mentioned by Ptolemy as settlements of the Varduli tribe. After a long period of scant records, Gebara reappears in an 11th-century document referencing the Counts of Oñati. During the late Middle Ages, the village became the stronghold of the powerful Ladrón de Guevara family, active in the War of the Bands. A castle was built on a hill but was destroyed in the First Carlist War. The Tower-palace of Guevara survives at the foot of the hill.

Notable Bearers

While the brief does not provide notable bearers, the spelling Gebara is characteristic of Basque usage, while Guevara is the Spanish form. The Guevara family and its offshoots have played significant roles in Basque and Spanish history.
