Đỗ

Đỗ is a Vietnamese family name written with the same Chinese character 杜 (Sino-Vietnamese đỗ), meaning “pear tree” or “to stop.” It is the Vietnamese equivalent of the Chinese surname Du and is distinct from the Portuguese diminutive chain (see below). According to Vietnamese scholar Lê Trung Hoa, approximately 3.1% of the Vietnamese population bore this surname as of 2005, ranking it among the most common surnames in Vietnam.

Etymology and Origin

Although Đỗ is etymologically unrelated to the Portuguese nickname Du (short for Eduardo from the Old English Edward, meaning “rich guard”), Vietnamese tradition traces the surname to two legendary origins. The first is the story of Đế Minh, grandson of the mythical ruler Thần Nông (Shennong), who married a fairy named Đỗ Quý (also known as Princess Đoan Trang, referred to as Đỗ Quý Thị). Their son became Kinh Dương Vương, father of Lạc Long Quân, a foundational figure in Vietnamese mythology. The second claimed ancestor is Đỗ Cảnh Thạc, a warlord during the 12 Lords Rebellion (10th century AD), from whom many modern Đỗ families claim descent.

Cultural Significance

The surname Đỗ is deeply rooted in Vietnamese history, borne by several notable figures. In the Lý Dynasty, Đỗ Anh Vũ (1113–1158) served as a powerful official in the royal court of Emperor Lý Anh Tông. During the 20th century, it was held by Đỗ Cao Trí (1929–1971), a general in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Contemporary bearers include Vietnamese-Australian comedian and actor Anh Do, as well as Đỗ Hoàng Điềm (born 1963), a Vietnamese demonstrator known internationally during the 1980s.

Distribution

While the surname is overwhelmingly common in Vietnam, the Vietnamese diaspora has carried it to countries such as the United States, Australia, and France. Statistical data from 2005 indicates it is the sixth most common surname in Vietnam, following Nguyễn, Trần, Lê, Phạm, and Huỳnh.
