Meaning & History
Etymology
Takeuchi (竹内) is a Japanese surname. It derives from the kanji 竹 (take) meaning "bamboo" and 内 (uchi) meaning "inside", thus signifying "within bamboo". An alternative spelling uses the kanji 武内, meaning "warrior household". The surname is common in west-central Japan. Some bearers pronounce it Takenouchi (Take-no-uchi). It can also be written as 竹野内.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The Takeuchi family traditionally claims descent from the legendary hero-statesman Takenouchi-no-Sukune, a counselor to several legendary emperors including Emperor Ōjin (late 4th century) and supposedly a descendant of the mythical Emperor Kōgen. Other prominent clans, such as the Soga clan, also claim Takenouchi-no-Sukune as an ancestor. The Takenouchi-ryū, a koryū (classical martial art) tradition, was founded by Takenouchi Chūnagon Daijō Hisamori in 1532 and continues to be preserved by descendants to this day.
