Kings and Queens of Portugal

Afonso Henriques was proclaimed king in 1139, establishing Portugal's independence from the Kingdom of León. Over the following century, the kingdom expanded southward against the Moors, reaching its current borders by 1249. Portugal's power peaked in the 16th century. Spanish Habsburgs ruled from 1580 until a 1640 rebellion installed the House of Braganza, which held power until the monarchy was abolished and a republic established in 1910.
