High Dukes and Kings of Poland

Mieszko of the Piast family was Poland's first historically attested ruler in the 10th century. His son Bolesław the Brave became the first crowned king in 1025. When Bolesław III died in 1138, Poland was divided among his five sons, leading to over a century of instability. Reunification began around 1300, and the Jagiellon dynasty came to power in 1382 through the marriage of Jadwiga and Jagiełło, who was also Grand Duke of Lithuania. The two states officially united as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569, with kings elected by nobles. The weakened Commonwealth was partitioned between Russia, Prussia, and the Habsburgs in the 18th century. Poland regained independence as a republic in 1918.
