Kings of Israel and Judah
Saul became Israel's first king in the 11th century BC, succeeding the era of judges (Hebrew shoftim). David and Solomon expanded the kingdom to its greatest extent. After Solomon, the realm split into the Northern Kingdom (Israel), conquered by Assyria in the 8th century, and the Southern Kingdom (Judah), destroyed by Babylon in the 6th century.
