Kings of Ireland
According to legend, the mythical Tuatha De Danann were defeated by forces led by the Iberian warrior Milesius, whose lieutenants Éremón and Eber divided rule — Éremón becoming sole king after defeating Eber. While the earliest kings are legendary, historically Niall Noígíallach in the 4th century was the first to exercise genuine power across Ireland. His descendants, the Uí Néill, dominated for centuries. The High King (Ardrí) title was not formally used until the 9th century. Few rulers controlled all of Ireland; those listed held power over large portions. The Irish kingship effectively ended with the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1169, despite later revival attempts, most notably by Edward Bruce in 1316.
