Kings and Queens of Hungary

Saint István (Stephen) became Hungary's first king, descending from Árpád, who led the Magyars into Hungary in the late 9th century. The Árpád dynasty ruled until 1301, succeeded by the Angevin dynasty under Charles I, a distant descendant of István V. After Queen Mária married Emperor Sigismund in 1386, the following 150 years brought internal disputes and Ottoman invasions. Mátyás Corvinus notably expanded the kingdom and resisted the Ottomans. The Habsburgs took control from 1563, also serving as Holy Roman Emperors, until the monarchy was dissolved after World War I.
