Germany was unified in 1871 with Otto von Bismarck as its first Chancellor (originally Reichskanzler, since 1949 Bundeskanzler). The presidency was established in 1919 during the Weimar Republic (originally Reichspräsident, later Bundespräsident). The President serves as official head of state, while the Chancellor heads the government.
