Georgia's President (პრეზიდენტი: Prezidenti) serves as the largely ceremonial head of state, while the Prime Minister (პრემიერ-მინისტრი: Premier-Ministri) leads the government. The Prime Minister's office was first established in 1918, abolished when Georgia joined the Soviet Union three years later, briefly restored in 1991, abolished again, and finally reestablished in 2004. The presidency was created in 1991.
