Kings and Tsars of Bulgaria

The Bulgars, arriving from north of the Caucasus under Khan Asparuh, settled in modern Bulgaria around the late 7th century. The Bulgarian Empire expanded over the next two centuries, reaching its greatest extent under Simeon the Great in the early 10th century, who adopted the title Tsar (from Latin Caesar) in 913. After Simeon's death, Bulgaria declined and fell under Byzantine rule by 1018. A successful revolt in 1185 by Petar and Ivan Asen established the Second Bulgarian Empire under the Asen dynasty. The Ottoman Turks conquered Bulgaria in the late 14th century, ruling for nearly 500 years until Russia's victory in the Russo-Turkish War of 1878 restored Bulgarian independence. The restored monarchy was abolished in 1946.
