Prime Ministers of Great Britain

The British Prime Minister is appointed by the monarch, the nominal head of state, and governs in their name. In modern practice, the Prime Minister serves as the country's actual leader. The role evolved gradually without formal legislation. Robert Walpole (1676-1745) is generally recognized as the first Prime Minister after becoming First Lord of the Treasury in 1721.
