Characters from the Bible
The Christian Bible consists of two major collections. The Old Testament, written between the 12th and 2nd centuries BC in Hebrew, contains legends, histories, laws and prophecies of the ancient Hebrews. Common name elements include el (as in Michael, Elijah) and jeho-, jo-, -jah, -iah (as in Joseph, Isaiah), all referring to the Hebrew God. The New Testament, written in Greek, recounts the ministry of Jesus and his early followers, and includes epistles by Saint Paul and others. It contains a mix of Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and Roman names.
