Meaning & History
Etymology
Smeets is a Dutch occupational surname meaning "smith" or "metalworker". It is a variant of Smit, which derives from Middle Dutch smit "metalworker, blacksmith", a cognate of the English surname Smith. Ultimately, all trace back to the Old English word smitan "to smite, to hit", referring to the action of forging metal.
The specific form Smeets is characteristic of the Limburg region, which straddles the southern Netherlands and eastern Belgium. It belongs to a wider family of Dutch and Flemish variations on the same root, such as Smits, Smet, and De Smedt.
