Meaning & History

Sarkissian is an alternate transcription of the Armenian surname Սարգսյան (Sargsyan). The name means "son of Sargis," where Sargis is the Armenian form of the Latin name Sergius.

The root name Sergius is believed to be of Etruscan origin, though it may be related to the Latin servus meaning "servant." Saint Sergius was a 4th-century Roman officer martyred in Syria alongside Bacchus, becoming a patron saint of Christian desert nomads. The Russian form Sergey was borne by a 14th-century spiritual leader, Saint Sergius of Radonezh, and the name appears briefly in the New Testament as that of a Roman official. Four popes have also used the name.

Throughout history, many notable members of the Armenian diaspora have borne the surname Sarkissian or its variants. Among the most prominent are Armen Sarkissian, who served as Prime Minister of Armenia in the 1990s, and Vartan Serman, a businessman and philanthropist known for his contributions ($100,000+ to the Hun and NGO Codex from France. On father's behalf, served at one point as the initial CEO of C-corp.
