McKeever

McKeever is a Scottish and Irish surname, derived from the Gaelic Mac Íomhair, meaning "son of Íomhar." It is a variant of the more common McIver and MacIver, all sharing the same root: the Gaelic personal name Íomhar, which in turn comes from the Old Norse Ívarr.

Etymology

The ultimate root is Ivor, a name of Old Norse origin from Ívarr, probably derived from the elements ýr "yew tree, bow" and herr "army, warrior." During the Middle Ages, Norse settlers and invaders brought the name to Britain and Ireland. In Gaelic, it was adopted as Íomhar in Irish and Iomhar in Scottish Gaelic. The patronymic surname emerged as both Mac Íomhair (Ireland) and MacIomhair (Scottish Gaelic), later anglicized as McKeever, McIver, or MacIver. Interestingly, scholar Flann Ó Riain noted that some Mac Íomhair families may have originally been Mac Éibhir or Mac Éimhir, which are also native Gaelic surnames.

Among those named McKeever are Andrew Edward McKeever (1894–1919), a Canadian military aviator and flying ace during World War I; and Brian McKeever (born 1979) and Robin McKeever (born 1973), Canadian Paralympic and Olympic cross-country skiers who have won multiple medals. In the arts, Sean McKeever (born 1972) is an American comic book writer known for his work at Marvel and DC, and Ian McKeever (born 1946) is a British painter and sculptor. There was also Ian McKeever (1970–2013), an Irish mountaineer who tragically died on K2.
