Meaning & History
Kitagawa (written respectively 北川 or 喜多川) is a Japanese surname. The first spelling, 北川, combines the kita meaning “north” and kawa meaning “river, stream,” translating as “north river.” The alternative spelling 喜多川 instead uses kanji for “joy,” “many,” and “river.”
The name is most famous through the ukiyo-e artist Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806), a master of woodblock prints and paintings renowned for his portraits of beautiful women (bijinga). Utamaro was born as Kitagawa Ichitarō, later adopting the art name Utamaro.
