Meaning & History
Etymology
Ghazaryan (Armenian: Ղազարյան) is an Armenian surname meaning "son of Ghazar". Ghazar is the Armenian form of Lazarus, which itself derives from Hebrew Eleazar (אֶלְעָזָר, ʾElʿazar) meaning "God has helped", composed of ʾel "God" and ʿazar "to help". The name appears in the Old Testament as one of the sons of Aaron and in the New Testament in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:15) and as the brother of Mary and Martha raised from the dead (John 11). In Armenian tradition, the name Ghazar has been used since early Christianization.
