Meaning & History
Fejes is a Hungarian surname derived from the word fej meaning "head". Originally, it was a nickname for a stubborn or hard-headed person, reflecting a common pattern in Hungarian onomastics where physical or character traits become family names.
Historical Name-Bearers and Vehicles
The name Fejes is particularly associated with Jenő Fejes (1877–1951), a Hungarian automotive engineer who designed an eponymous automobile. The Fejes car was manufactured in Budapest between 1923 and 1932 by the company Fejes Lemezmotor és Gépgyár Rt. The vehicle was notable for its construction from welded and pressed iron, including the 1244 cc overhead valve engine. Approximately 45 cars were produced before financial difficulties ended production. The Hungarian Post Office purchased several of these vehicles. An attempt to manufacture the car in England under the name Ascot, by the Fejes Patents Syndicate Ltd, was unsuccessful.
Linguistic and Cultural Context
As a surname, Fejes follows Hungarian naming conventions where suffixes like -s often denote an association or characteristic (cf. fej → Fejes). It is unrelated to the Jewish name Fejes, which may be a variant of Fejes derived from Hebrew feige (fig).
