Dumbledore is a fictional surname used by J. K. Rowling for Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series. The surname derives from a dialectal English word, dumbledore, meaning "bumblebee". Rowling has stated she chose the name because she imagined Dumbledore humming to himself, akin to the buzzing of a bee. The word dumbledore itself is an old regional term, primarily from southwestern England, originally applied to the large, buzzing insect.
