Meaning & History

Dempsey is a surname of Irish origin, derived from the anglicized form of the Gaelic Ó Díomasaigh, meaning "descendant of Díomasach." The personal name Díomasach comes from the Irish adjective díomasach, which translates to "proud" or "arrogant." Occasionally, the name was also anglicized as Proudman.

Etymology and Historical Background

The Ó Díomasaigh family originated in the Kingdom of Uí Failghe (present-day County Offaly). They were powerful in the territory of Clanmalier, on the borders of what are now counties Laois and Offaly, up until the seventeenth century. According to John Grenham, the family figured notably in medieval Irish history. In the 12th century, Henry II established his court in Dublin and summoned the Leinster chiefs. The O'Dempsey, Chief of Offaly, refused to attend. In response, Strongbow and his son-in-law De Quincy marched into O'Dempsey territory to seize land, but the O'Dempsey and his forces defended successfully.
