Meaning & History

Coppola is an Italian surname, most famously borne by the American filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola (1939-). Its usage extends from southern Italy, particularly Sicily, through the diaspora of Italian emigrants, most notably in the United States.

Etymology and Origins

The surname derives from the Italian word coppola, which refers to a type of soft cap that is a traditional part of Sicilian and southern Italian folk costume. The name was therefore an occupational surname for a person who made or sold these hats, or perhaps a nickname for someone who habitually wore one. The Dictionary of American Family Names defines it as “hat seller” (Hanks, Patrick, ed. (2003), “Coppola”, Volume 1, page 148). Importantly, the suffix -ola indicates something small or a variant; hence coppola is a variant of shorter forms such as coppia meaning cap.
