Calligaris is an Italian occupational surname derived from the Late Latin caligarius, meaning "shoemaker" (from caliga, a type of Roman military boot).
The surname is most famously borne by several generations of Italian swimmers. Mauro Calligaris (1952–2000) and his sister Novella Calligaris (born 1954) were both Olympic swimmers; Novella won multiple medals at European championships. Their mother Romana Calligaris (1924–2002) was also a competitive swimmer. Other notable bearers include Chiara Calligaris (born 1971), an Olympic sailor; Sergio Calligaris (1941–2023), an Argentine-born pianist and composer; and Viola Calligaris (born 1996), a Swiss footballer.
