Meaning & History
Brivio is an Italian surname traced to the town of Brivio in Lombardy. The town Brivio (Brianzöö: Brivi, Bergamasque: Brìe) is a comune in the province of Lecco, in the historical subregion of Brianza, at the border with the province of Bergamo. It is served by the Olgiate-Calco-Brivio railway station.
The name of the town is supposed to derive from a Celtic word meaning “bridge.” This etymology suggests the area may have been an ancient bridge site during Celtic habitation of the region. Celts settled parts of Lombardy before Roman influence; the linguistic root appears in place names.
As a surname, Brivio likely originated as a locational surname for families originating from that town. It belongs to a group of locational surnames derived from Italian place names. Emigration from Lombardy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries spread the surname to the Americas and other regions.
Today, Brivio is most common in northern Italy, notably Lombardy, with concentrations also in regions with historical Lombard migration.
