Etymology

Bayer is a German surname meaning “person from Bavaria.” The name derives from the German name for Bavaria, Byern (modern Bayern), referring to an inhabitant of that region. Variants include Baier and Beyer, all originally denoting a Bavarian. The root toponym bayern is closely related.

Notable Bearers

The most famous bearer is German dye salesman Friedrich Bayer (1825–1880), who co-founded Bayer AG—now a multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company—with Johann Friedrich Weskott in 1863. The company is best known for launching Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in 1899. Other notable bearers include German chemist Adolf von Baeyer, though his surname is spelled differently; and various athletes, such as footballer Maxi Bayer and American football player Brett Bayer.

Cowdenbeath, a town in Scotland, gave rise to the variant pluralized “Bayers” due to migration of German workers in the 19ᵗʰ century.
