Meaning & History

Etymology and Historical Context

Baláž is a Slovak surname that derives from the Hungarian given name Balázs, which in turn originates from the Latin name Blaise. The Latin Blasius (from which Blaise comes) is believed to derive from the word blaesus, meaning "lisping" or "stammering." Despite its somewhat unusual etymology, the name gained popularity through the Christian martyr Saint Blaise, a 4th-century Armenian bishop. In the Byzantine and Western traditions, Saint Blaise is considered the patron saint of throat illnesses, owing to a miracle in which he saved a boy from choking.
