Meaning & History
Aarle is a Dutch toponymic surname, denoting a person who originally came from one of several places named Aarle in the Netherlands, or from the city of Arlon in Belgium (known as Aarlen in Dutch). The name is particularly concentrated in the province of North Brabant.
Etymology
The place name Aarle is first attested as aerle in 1496. It is derived from a compound of Old Dutch *are (meaning "maple") and lo (meaning "light forest" or "woodland grove"). Thus, the original toponym likely referred to a maple wood or a clearing with maple trees. The same etymological elements are found in other Dutch place names such as Aarle-Rixtel, Taarlo, Ten Aarlo and Tynaarlo.
Distribution and Variants
The surname Aarle sometimes appears with the prefix "Van," as in Van Aarle, which explicitly means "from Aarle." There is also a dialect form Oarzel. The name remains relatively rare, with historical records often linking bearers to the village of Aarle (now a hamlet under Best municipality in North Brabant).

According to Dutch toponymist Gerard van Berkel and Kees Samplonius, the place name is of Old Dutch origin, reinforcing the link to maple trees and forests.
