Meaning & History
Origin and Etymology
Su (苏) is a Chinese surname. The character 苏 originally referred to the perilla plant, an herb used in traditional medicine and cuisine. In ancient times, it also designated a minor state called Su (苏) that existed during the Zhou dynasty. As a result, the surname Su originated both as a toponymic name from that state and as a name adopted by descendants of officials or nobles associated with the perilla or the state.
Historical Context
The state of Su was located in present-day Henan province and was eventually conquered by the state of Wei during the Warring States period. Many of its inhabitants then adopted the name of their former state as their surname, preserving a link to their ancestry. Throughout Chinese history, the Su clan spread to various regions and became well-established, giving rise to numerous prominent families.
