Meaning & History
Aliev (also spelled Aliyev; feminine form Alieva) is a common surname in parts of the Caucasus and Central Asia, particularly among speakers of Turkic languages such as Kazakh, Kyrgyz, and Tajik, as well as among the Avar and Chechen peoples of the North Caucasus. The surname is derived from the Arabic given name Ali, meaning "lofty" or "sublime." The suffix -ev (or -yev in some transliteration systems) is a Russian patronymic ending, so Aliev literally means "son of Ali." This reflects the influence of Russian naming conventions on many Muslim populations that were part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union, where adding a Russian suffix to a father's given name became standard even among non-Slavic cultures.
