Meaning & Origin
Heimisson is an Icelandic patronymic surname meaning "son of Heimir". It follows the common Icelandic naming tradition, where surnames are formed by adding -son (son) or -dóttir (daughter) to the father's name, rather than using fixed family names. Matronymics are also possible, but patronymics remain prevalent in modern Iceland. The name Heimir derives from the Old Norse element heimr, meaning "home". In Old Norse mythology and legend, Heimir appears as a king of Hlymdalir in the Völsungasaga, and he is a foster father to the hero Sigurðr. The root Hama is an Old English cognate, meaning "home", and occurs in Anglo-Saxon tales such as Beowulf as the name of a Gothic warrior. Today, Heimisson is rare and concentrated in Iceland due to the uniqueness of the patronymic system.
